Frequently Asked Questions
What is Geriatric Medicine?
Geriatric Medicine is a specialty of medicine concerned with the physical, mental, functional, and social conditions in older patients. It focuses on patients with a high degree of frailty and active multiple pathology, takes a holistic multidisciplinary team approach, and aims to optimise functional status and quality of life. Most patients will be over 65, but the specialty is most relevant for the 80+ age group.
When should I see a geriatrician in Singapore?
You should consider seeing a geriatrician when your elderly parent has multiple chronic conditions, there are noticeable changes in memory or cognitive function, frequent falls, managing five or more medications, unexplained weight loss or fatigue, need help with end-of-life planning, or recovering from a hospital stay.
Help! I have too many tablets to eat, what do I need to bring on my first visit?
Please bring along any previous laboratory investigations, radiological investigations (including CT or MRI Brain) and a complete medication list, if any. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Please bring along any spectacles, hearing aids and walking aids.
My mother is in a nursing home. Is Dr Farhan able to see her there?
Yes, if the nursing home permits a visiting doctor, Dr Farhan is able to offer a geriatrician consultation in the nursing home. Contact us to book an appointment.
How much does a geriatrician consultation cost in Singapore?
At Alami Clinic: In-clinic consultation from $80-$120, Comprehensive geriatric assessment from $159, Home visit (9AM-5PM) $420, After-hours (5PM-9PM) $599, Emergency $799. CHAS, Pioneer Generation, and Merdeka Generation subsidies are accepted.
What is the difference between a geriatrician and a GP?
A GP has a general medical degree while a geriatrician has 6+ years of additional specialist training in elderly care. GPs treat all ages while geriatricians specialise in older adults (65+). GPs treat individual conditions while geriatricians take a holistic view. Geriatricians are better equipped for dementia, polypharmacy, frailty, and multi-organ disease.
Do I need a referral to see a geriatrician?
No, you do not need a referral to see a geriatrician at Alami Clinic. You can book an appointment directly via our online booking system, call us, or WhatsApp us. However, bringing a referral letter from your GP or hospital doctor is helpful.
Does CHAS cover geriatrician visits?
Yes, CHAS subsidies are available at Alami Clinic. The subsidy depends on your card tier: CHAS Blue (higher subsidies), CHAS Orange (moderate), CHAS Green (basic for all Singaporeans), and Pioneer/Merdeka Generation (additional subsidies). Please bring your CHAS card and NRIC when visiting.

I think my father is getting forgetful — aren't memory issues a part of normal ageing?
While some mild forgetfulness can be part of normal ageing, significant changes deserve a medical consultation. Warning signs include repeating the same questions, getting lost in familiar places, difficulty managing finances or medications, personality or mood changes, and withdrawing from social activities. Our memory screening packages can help detect early signs of dementia.
